Shirley C. Seguin
May 4, 1925 - July 29, 2012
Shirley Corrine Seguin, a resident of Allen Park since 1946, passed away at Maple Heights Retirement Community in that city on July 29, 2012, at the age of 87. She was born at the family home in Detroit on May 4, 1925, to Elbert A. Emrick and Nellie F. (Beck) Emrick, both formerly of Ohio. The family later moved to Dearborn, where she graduated from Dearborn High School in 1943. Shirley enjoyed keeping in touch with her former classmates, attending many reunions over the years. While in high school, she met Aubert F. Seguin, also of Detroit, who had emigrated with his family from Montreal, Canada, at the age of four. They married at Sacred Heart Church in Dearborn on May 7, 1943, prior to Aubert’s deployment to Europe with the US Army during World War II. After the war, they purchased their first and only home in Allen Park in 1946, where they raised eight children. Shirley loved to garden, and their yard was a testament to that hobby. They were active parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen in Melvindale, where all their children attended grade school. They were married for 51 years until Aubert’s death in 1994. Shirley led a very active life, traveling with her husband prior to his death, and by herself and with groups afterward. She participated in bus tours, took a cross-country train trip, and even drove alone to Kentucky to visit her sister-in-law. She was still working part-time at the age of 85, when a stroke forced her retirement. She is survived by her eight children: Lawrence (Brenda), of Ventura, CA; Ronald (Colleen), of Lincoln Park; Kenneth (Sharon), of Prosper, TX; Mary Ellen Seguin-Adomat (Kim), of Traverse City; Thomas, of Allen Park; Theresa (Michael) Weber, of Gaylord; Daniel (Cheryl), of Garden City; and David, of Fredericktown, MO. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her eight siblings, and three stillborn children. Visitation will be at Hackett-Metcalf Funeral Home on Saturday, August 4, from 4:00-9:00pm, and Sunday, August 5, from 2:00-9:00pm. A rosary will be said on Sunday at 7:00pm at the funeral home. There will be a mass in celebration of her life on Monday, August 6, at 10:30am at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Prior to mass Mrs. Seguin will be instate at the church at 10:00am. Mrs. Seguin will be interred with her husband at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Shirley’s name may be directed to Odyssey Hospice Health Care of Detroit or the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation.
